The way we work has changed much from the past decades, now more and more jobs require you to sit and stare at screens all day. These changes have led to many known and unknown problems in individuals especially who spent more time on computers and smartphones. The thing is we cannot just say no to it because it is now part of our jobs.

One of the very well known and widely popular problem related to eyes is eye strain or Computer Vision Syndrome, CVS for short. When you look at screens all day your eyes get tired and uncomfortable in the end. Most people do not understand this problem until it really starts hurting their work routine.

In this post I have compiled a list of few effective eye exercises that you can do anytime to make sure your eyes are good all the day. Please note, these are just preventive measures not a cure for eye problems, if you have any eye conditions you do not understand, you should consult a specialist.

Near and Far Focus

This exercise helps strengthen your Ciliary muscles, muscles that control the focus by adjusting your eye lens. In this exercise, you have to switch your eye focus continuously between objects placed far away and one placed near .

  • Hold your thumb in front of your face at 10-12 Inches away from your eyes.
  • Look at it for 3 seconds then look as far as you can (must be at least 20 feet).
  • Repeat the exercise for 2 Minutes.

Figure 8 (Vertical & Horizontal)

This exercise helps strengthen your eye muscles that control the movement of your eyeballs and also lubricates your eye surface well. In this simple eye exercise, you have to close your eyes and move them to trace a figure eight.

  • Close your eyes and imagine a large picture of figure 8
  • Move your eyes over the figure 5 times and then change the direction of movement.
  • Repeat the exercise for 2 Minutes
  • Close your eyes again, this time imagine a horizontal figure 8
  • Move your eyes over the figure 5 times and then change the direction of movement.
  • Repeat the exercise for 2 Minutes

Conscious Blinking

On a computer or any other screen for example our blink rates gets reduced, this is one of the major reasons we get dry eyes when on computers. Voluntarily blinking your eyes helps spreads the eye fluids all over and lubricates your eye surface well.

  • Stable yourself and look far away
  • Blink your eyes slowly, not faster than 2 times a second.
  • Repeat this exercise for 2 Minutes

Look in the dark

Staring continuously on a screen may cause light sensitivity thus looking in the dark helps your light sensitive cells in the eyes recharge up. It also helps your Iris expand to its fullest thus reducing muscle stress.

  • Stable yourself
  • Cover your eyes with your palm keeping your eyes open
  • Make sure no light enters
  • Keep looking in the dark for 20-30 Seconds

Palming

Palming is an old and popular technique used for refreshing face muscles and comforting your eyes. You need to rub your hands together until they are hot enough and apply all the heat over your face with a gentle pressure. This exercise helps moisten up your eyes.

  • Rub your hands together for 4-5 Seconds
  • Move your palms over your face, applying very gentle pressure over your eyes
  • Repeat this exercise 10 times.

These are few simple exercises, experts recommend which when combined with proper dietary habits may benefit your overall eye health.
